Carrie Schneider: Reading Women at Unscripted Bal Harbour, Miami Curated by Kendra Paitz at the invitation of Unscripted Bal Harbour's curator Claire Breukel. On view from November 1, 2017 through February 28, 2018. Partnerships: Unscripted Bal Harbour; Perez Art Museum Miami; Miami Book Fair; University Galleries of Illinois State University.
From 2012 through 2014, New York-based artist Carrie Schneider (American, born 1979) photographed and filmed 100 women in their own homes and studios as each read a book of her choice by a women writer. Reading Women resulted in portraits and a film that show the period during which each reader was the most immersed in her text. This iteration of Reading Women pairs a selection of photographic portraits with the accompanying photographs of readers holding their books open to the last pages they read. Installed along Bal Harbour's active beach path, these interior scenes prompt reflection on the power of stillness and concentration. Drawing attention to the achievements of women, the selections span continents, genres, and generations: Sumerian poet Enheduanna, Argentine poet Alejandra Pizarnik, American activist and scholar Angela Davis, French journalist Claire Parnet, Pakistani activist Malala Yousafazi, American folklorist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, and more.
