Bethany Collins: A Pattern or Practice

Bethany Collins conceptually examines personal, bureaucratic, lyrical, and literary language for its racial biases and failures. Examples include America: A Hymnal, an artist's book featuring 100 different versions of "My Country 'Tis of Thee" with the unifying tune burned out via a laser cutter; Colorblind Dictionary, for which she methodically erased all references to color in a Webster’s New World Dictionary; and The Birmingham News (1963), double-blind-embossed prints calling attention to the newspaper's editorial decision not to feature Civil Rights stories on its cover pages during Spring 1963.

Published by University Galleries of Illinois State University in conjunction with the first survey of Bethany Collins' work, this monograph features drawings, prints, paintings, performances, installations, artist's books, and sculptures created from 2012 to 2021.
